Race to Restore 5K

By Cynthia Ward

I took a break from collecting nominating petition signatures in some busy part of the city. Instead, I spent the morning volunteering at the Race to Restore, which was sponsored by the Friends of Lansing’s Historic Cemeteries.  Race proceeds go to upright downed monuments and markers at Mt. Hope Cemetery.  It was a perfect fall morning to run or walk a beautiful 5K in Lansing’s historic Mt. Hope Cemetery.  The air was crisp and the trees were boasting their autumnal colors.  Admittedly, I was inspired by the runners and walkers of all ages who tackled the punishing hills for which Mt. Hope Cemetery is known.  I have run a few races over the years, but I have never been a fan of hills.     The race director is Loretta Stanaway, whom I first met during my service on the city of Lansing Park Board back in 2007.   Loretta serves as president of the friends of Lansing’s Historic Cemeteries.  Simply put, Loretta cares about our municipal cemeteries; I commend and thank her for years of dedicated service.  I also had the pleasure of meeting the organization’s vice-president, Diane Clark and other volunteers. Because I rarely leave home without my petitions, I was able to get a few signatures after the race.  As always, thanks to those who signed!
